Photography has changed a lot over the years, digital photography has been around for many years now, but is the most common type of photography although centuries ago the main type of photography was film.
Developing negatives from film is a long process, and you cannot see your photos until they are developed whereas digital photography can be put onto a computer and edited and made completely different on Photoshop and other editing websites.
Digital photography allows you to make more accurate settings so that you can get your picture perfect, like white balance, built in flash, shutter speed etc.
Film photography is a lot harder than digital although sometimes you can get a great effect from film if you purposely want grain or for the photo to look old, although Photoshop can do all of those things with one click of a button.
Developing film is a very difficult thing to do, one mistake can ruin a whole picture, or film if its exposed in the wrong light., you have to do test strips first to see how long to expose the negative for and also need equipment to check that the picture is the right size and fully focused and not distorted or too grainy. If a film is not loaded into a camera properly that can also mess up the film and waste a lot of shooting time when doing a project.
Digital photography is defiantly better for perfectionists, because on all digital cameras you can play back the picture to see if it needs to be shot again, and you can normally tell by looking at it what changes need to be made, for example an object in the shot that’s not meant to be there, or if the picture is too blurry or distorted.
Photography has built up over the years, from the first ever camera, that could only take a certain amount of pictures, too cameras with hundreds of different settings, accessories, studios, studio equipment and many types of cameras from Nikon, Canon, Sony and Fujifilm.
Photography is used for many different things these days, from crime scene evidence photography too fashion studio photography, either film or digital can be used for these depending on what sort of photo’s they are.
Film photography is very expensive because of the cost of film, repairs, chemicals, enlargers and paper that you need to buy to develop the photographs, whereas digital is cheaper because you can print the pictures from a printer or shop and also you don’t have to keep buying film, although you do need money for repairs and memory cards etc.
Overall I think that the best photography is digital because you can retake photographs if they do not turn out as you like them to, although film is more fun and interesting when developing the photo’s.
Digital photography can be better quality and also can be played with on computers to make them look better and to add effect you may not be able to do with the camera itself.
If I had to choose out of the two I would choose digital because it’s a lot easier and you can take hundreds of pictures in a shoot whereas using film you would have to keep changing the film when it runs out and also you cannot delete the photos that aren’t right.
